Color, Shape & Pattern in Water Media

My Art and Me

I am a Nebraska artist with a passion for water media, especially transparent watercolor.  Explore my website and you will find many styles and subjects with the common thread being my love of color, shape, and pattern.

I have developed an abiding interest in abstraction and flat design.  I like to eliminate the illusion of depth, and to compose paintings dominated by flat shapes of color.

Another design interest of mine is in creating multiple-image paintings.  For these pieces I develop preliminary studies by hand or by computer that overlay or weave more than one image into a single complex design.

Among my other favorite approaches is "painting the negative," in which I reveal each part of my subject by painting the area around it, defining edges rather than filling shapes. This approach lends itself beautifully to the medium of watercolor because of its transparency.

I am a former architect who discovered art as a creative outlet when I left the practice of architecture to raise my family.  I've been painting now for nearly 25 years.  What joy this has brought me!

My art appears in collections nationwide and has been published in "Watercolor Magic" and "Nebraska Life" magazines.  I display my work in many shows and competitions, and am a frequent award winner.

Since 1994, I have taught many popular watercolor classes and workshops, both independently and through Metropolitan Community College in Omaha. I am a past president of Bellevue Artists' Association, and winner of their Golden Palette Award for my contribution to the fine arts.
